FC Porto Clever Free Kick v Schalke 04

FC Porto caught our eye on the opening matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage against Schalke 04 with a clever free kick routine, which we have broken down with Globall Coach.

With the best headers of the ball in the centre of the goal, the defence could be lured into thinking that the free kick will be directly crossed into the penalty area for a header on goal.

But, as you see from the animation above, they are caught out with a clever run in behind the two man wall.

The five players who start around the edge of the penalty area move into positions to attack the cross. Two attack the six yard line for ball across while three hang back somewhat, for a possible pullback from the cross or a rebound coming back into that area.

Globall Coach is used by many clubs to underpin their set piece program, to clearly communicate each player’s role using the animations. Want to know more about how we can help you? Get in touch!
