New Look Croatia To Build On World Cup Success?

One of the Globall Coach team tipped Croatia for good things at the World Cup during the summer (read the blog here), so as they get ready to tackle their first competitive fixture since they reached the final of the tournament in Russia, we thought we'd take a quick look at their squad post-World Cup Final.

They have selected a younger and more inexperienced squad for this international double header; a 1-1 draw away in Portugal last Thursday and tonight's Nations League game against Spain.

The likes of Domagoj Vida, Ivan Rakitic and Luka Modric provide an experienced and talented spine and continuity from the World Cup side which did incredibly well to reach the final and were somewhat unlucky against France in Moscow.

Up front, they gave a debut to Marko Livaja against Portugal and he is set to lead the line once against the Spanish this evening.

But in terms of the formation and their approach tactically, we would expect them to play in a very similar way to the style which led them to that World Cup Final appearance last summer, just with different personnel performing those roles.

If the predicted team for tonight's game is correct (see left), then coach Zlatko Dalić will continue with a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Modric the playmaker in the 'number 10' position making them tick, with Pjaca and Perisic getting forward to put crosses into the box but also support striker Livaja.

It will be interesting to see if Croatia can continue the impressive performances from the World Cup with a new-look side as they build towards UEFA Euro 2020.
