Wayne Rooney's Wonder Free Kick Strike Helps DC United's Play-Off Push

Since his transfer to the MLS with DC United, Wayne Rooney has helped his new club to push for a place in the MLS play-offs. After leaving the Premier League and his boyhood club Everton, Rooney has scored 10 goals and assisted a further six which has put DC inside the top six in the Eastern Conference standings and on the verge of the end of season shootout.

His presence in the DC dressing room has led to a marked upturn in their fortunes, having sat bottom up until he signed.

And he continues to show the quality that made him one of the most sought after players in the 2000s as his new club appear set to make the MLS play-offs.

Last night, Rooney scored a spectacular free kick goal against Toronto FC, which we broke down using Globall Coach.

DC United had a left footer and right footer standing over the ball, and placed an attacker on the end of Toronto’s defensive wall.

The position of the attacker in the wall may have been a clue that the left footer was going to try and curl it that side, the man obstructing the view of the goalkeeper before shifting out of the way to give space for the ball to pass through, but it was the right footed Rooney who produced a sublime finish.
